Sermon: Jesus the Valentine
Bible Passage: Ephesians 5:25-33

I. Husbands are exhorted to “love” their wives (5:25)

1. Love is not a feeling
2. It is an action
3. It is transformative
4. It is void of self-interest
5. It is centered on others
6. (Let’s see how “love” is an action from the model of Jesus)

II. Jesus’ love for the Church is the standard every husband must strive for when it comes to his relationship with his wife (5:25-26)

1. Jesus gave himself up voluntarily for the church (5:25)
2. The goal of Christ “giving” Himself for the Church has three purposes/results (5:27)
a. To make her holy/perfect by means of his words
b. To sanctify her
c. To present her to himself as an extraordinary person

III. When a husband begins to imitate Christ in his relationship with his wife, it will look as follows: (5:28-33)

1. He keeps his interest aside and takes up the interest of his wife—i.e., he becomes sacrificial
2. He speaks words to his wife that fixes her flaws and equips her to improve from her blemishes
3. Instead of being the ruler of the household, he becomes the servant
4. He shifts his loyalty from his biological family to his wife—leaves and cleaves (Read 5:31)

Take Away

1. Jesus is the standard of our relationship with our spouse (valentine). Therefore, make changes based on the Standard
2. Make loyalty to your spouse the priority by placing less importance to other loyalties
