Sermon: Jesus the King
Bible Passage: Luke 19:29-46

I. Introductory matters

1. Jesus left Galilee (cf. Luke 9:51) for Jerusalem
2. Jesus travelled through Jericho and reached Mount of Olives, where kings of Judah usually would begin their entry towards the city of Jerusalem after their victory—triumphal entry
3. It is also the traditional place where enthronement and covenant renewal procession would start every year with the singing of Psalms like Psalm 118

II. Observations on the actions of Jesus

  1. Jesus affirmed that He is the King that the prophet Zechariah prophesied (Zech 9:9)

a. He will be righteous
b. He will bring salvation to His people
c. He will be “humble”
d. He will ride a donkey, a colt
e. The King would enter Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives

2. Just as a king would command, King Jesus commanded two of His disciples “Go to the village ahead of you. When you enter it, you will find a colt tied there that has never been ridden. Untie it and bring it here” (verse 30)
3. King Jesus made a demand for a colt “The Lord needs of it” (verse 31)
4. King Jesus received the praises and celebrations of His followers (verse 37)

a. The whole crowd of his disciples began to rejoice and praise God with a loud voice for all the mighty works they had seen
b. Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord (verse 37)

III. Two quick observations

1. Jesus used the title “the Lord” for Himself—the title of authority (verses 31 & 34)
2. Jesus’ disciples used the title “King” for Him—“the King who comes from God” (verse 38)

IV. The response of the onlookers

1. Unwilling to accept the King—“Rabbi, rebuke your disciples” (19:40)
2. Unable to understand God’s work in Jesus (19:41)
3. Preoccupied with their commerce and economics to the extent of using the sacred premises for their purposes (19:45-48)
4. Led a fruitless life that made Jesus to curse them (cf. Mark 11:12-14)
5. The costly rejection of King Jesus—“you did not recognize the time of your visitation from God” (verse 44)—imperceptive people

V. The response of Jesus’ Disciples

1. Jesus’ disciples obeyed their King how much ever challenging the command/demand was (cf. verse 30)
2. The villagers honored the King without holding the animal back
3. Even the colt let Jesus ride on it!
4. Jesus’ disciples celebrated their King

Take Away:

Demonstrate evidence that Jesus is your King
