Sermon: Our Glorious Sanctification (Christian Life)
Bible Passage: Romans 5:1-6:4
God’s acquittal of sinful man (justification: declaration to be righteous) has blessings that make Christian life a glorious journey (Romans 5)
1. Peace with God (verse 1)
a. “Peace” here refers to the absence of hostility between God and man
b. Rom 5:10: “We were God’s enemies, but he made us his friends through the death of his Son”—Reconciliation
2. Unhindered access to God (verse 2)
a. Sphere of God’s grace—(verse 2a) “through whom [Jesus] we have also obtained access by faith into this grace”
b. A perpetual entry, not a periodic visit
3. Continued standing before God with God’s favor (verse 2)—a well settled and established relationship
4. “God-like-ness” in a believer which is both present and future—the “glory of God” (verse 2 vs Rom 3:23 “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God)
5. Gift of the Holy Spirit (verse 5):
6. Salvation from God’s wrath (5:9)
7. End of old heritage and beginning of new heritage (12-21)
a. The consequence of Adam’s sin is reversed (verses 12-15)—consequence of Adam’s sin is “death”
i. Death is reversed by life (verse 12, 15, 17-18)
ii. Condemnation is reversed by justification (verse 16)
b. The benefits of Jesus’ obedience are passed on to the believers
i. Grace (verse 15)—how much more did God’s grace and the gift that came by the grace of the one man, Jesus Christ, overflow to the many!
ii. Righteousness (verse 19)
iii. Eternal life (verse 23)
c. Jesus becomes the head of the new race by replacing Adam’s race
8. An end of one association and a beginning of another association (6:1-4)
a. Dead to sin (end of life dictated by flesh)
b. Raised with Christ
