Sermon: Jesus the King (A Day of Enthronement of King Jesus)
Bible Passage: Zechariah 9:9-10; Luke 19:28-44
I. Luke presents Jesus as the expected Jewish King in various places:
1. Luke 1:32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his kingdom there will be no end.” (Gabriel)
2. Luke 1:68 “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, for he has visited and redeemed his people and has raised up a horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David (Zechariah)
3. Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord (Angels)
4. Luke 18: 38 And he cried out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!” (cf. 2 Sam 7:12-13) (Blind man)
II. Jesus arrives at the Mount of Olives (Luke 19:28-29)
III. Jesus sends two of His disciples to fetch him a colt πῶλος
1. It was an unbroken colt, never ridden before (cf. Num 19:2; Deut 21:3; 1 Sam 6:7)
2. They were to say, “The Lord needs it” (verses 30-35)
3. The owners of the colt complied (verses 30-35)
IV. Jesus rode a colt (verses 35-36)
1. In the OT, when people became insensitive to words prophets used dramatic means to communicate the message
a. 1 Kings 11:29–31
b. Jeremiah 13:1–11
c. Jeremiah 27:1–11
d. Ezekiel 4:1–3
2. Through this dramatic means, Jesus announces that He is the King
V. As Jesus was riding on the colt, his disciples shouted “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!” (verse 38)
1. Signing of Psalm 118:26
a. Psalm 118 is an enthronement psalm
b. This was sung every year at the entrance of YHWH and His ascension on to the throne as the King
c. Luke gives clarity to verse 26 “blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord! Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!””
d. The people spreading clothes are part of enthronement celebrations
2. Through their song, Jesus’ disciples announced that Jesus is the King
VI. Pharisees disapproved disciples’ behavior, and asked Jesus to rebuke them (verses 39-40)—the Jews rejected Jesus’ message and offer
VII. But Jesus approved the behavior of His disciples (verses 39-40)
VIII. People’s rejection of Jesus’ Kingship awaits the consequence and judgement (verses 41-44)
IX. Jesus tells the people of Judah that He is the King, the fulfillment of Zechariah 9:9-10
1. The characters of the King (verse 9)
a. He is righteous
b. He brings salvation to His people
c. He is “humble”
d. He is not a warrior because he is a peaceful King—ride a donkey, a colt
2. The actions of the King (verse 10):
a. He will put an end to the war assets such as: chariots, war horses, and bows
b. He would establish peaceful relationship with rest of the world
c. His reign will expand beyond Judean geographical boundary
3. Through this enacted drama Jesus expected an appropriate response
a. Accept Jesus as their King
b. Honor Him with proper worship
Take Away: (How would you respond to Jesus’ offer to be the King?)
Accept Jesus as your King
a. Serve Him with obedience (verses 30-31)
b. Honor Him by not withholding (verses 34-35)
c. Allow Him to have all authority over you (verse 36)
d. Honor Him with worship (verse 38)
